Live Nation is facing a multi-million-dollar class action lawsuit following a Ticketmaster data breach earlier this year that saw hackers obtain details from 560 million customers.
In April, a hacker group known as ShinyHunters accessed the Ticketmaster database and stole 1.3 terabytes of data.
Details including full names, addresses, phone numbers, and partial payment card data were taken, and the culprits are demanding a ransom of $500,000 (£385,000/€460,000) to prevent the data from being resold.
At first, Ticketmaster urged users to carry out security checks due to the breach before confirming it the following month.
It then launched an investigation after identifying unauthorised activity on “a third-party cloud database environment containing company data”.
Plaintiff Daniel Pomeroy is bringing the complaint against Ticketmaster and Live Nation on behalf of all others who have been affected. The suit claims that the companies failed to protect the data of their customers and failed to put security measures in place to prevent attacks.
“Plaintiff brings this class action against Defendant for its failure to properly secure and safeguard the personally identifiable information of its customers, including, but nor limited to: full names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and credit card details,” read the lawsuit.
It also alleges that Ticketmaster did not inform customers that their data had been breached in a timely manner.
“Defendant did not discover the Data Breach until May 23, 2024, nearly seven weeks later, and did not notify Plaintiff or Class Members until July 17, 2024, another almost two months after the Data Breach was discovered.”
It is the second time this month that Live Nation and Ticketmaster are facing legal trouble.
Law firm Gordon Legal is undertaking an investigation into the two before potentially launching a class action lawsuit after customers claimed they were overcharged for tickets to next year’s Australian Grand Prix.
