The United Kingdom is set to house the first Universal theme park in Europe, the government has said.
Universal Destinations & Experiences intends to build and operate the company’s first-ever theme park and resort in the UK, with Bedford as its chosen location, pending planning consent approvals.
It is estimated that the 476-acre complex could attract 8.5 million visitors in its first year alone.
A full planning proposal is due to be submitted to the UK government, and construction is expected to start in 2026 ahead of a projected 2031 opening.
Universal has existing theme parks in Orlando and Los Angeles in the US, as well as China, Japan and Singapore.
The proposed plans include an entertainment resort complex, with the theme park featuring rides, attractions and entertainment. Initial resort plans also include a 500-room hotel, and a retail, dining and entertainment complex.
Universal purchased the land just south of Bedford in December 2023, and has since explored the potential to deliver a new theme park and resort experience at this site.
“We have closed the deal on a multi-billion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe, firmly putting the county on the global stage,” said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“This is our Plan for Change in action, combining local and national growth with creating around 28,000 new jobs across sectors such as construction, AI, and tourism.
“It is not just about numbers; it’s about securing real opportunities for people in our country. Together, we are building a brighter future for the UK, getting people into work and ensuring our economy remains strong and competitive.”
The UK government has also committed to major investment in infrastructure around the site to support the delivery of the project, and ensure it is well connected and easily accessible. The government recently signed off the expansion of nearby Luton Airport, enticing international visitors.
“Bringing a world-class theme park and resort to the United Kingdom is a tremendous opportunity and is part of our strategy to introduce the Universal brand and experiences to new audiences around the globe,” said Mark Woodbury, chairman and chief executive of Universal Destinations & Experiences.
“We appreciate the incredible support for our proposed project and look forward to bringing it to life in the years ahead.”
