Ticketmaster is to pay out C$6m in a Canadian class action lawsuit regarding the usage of 'drip pricing'.

The settlement, which will be split between those signed on to the class action, was finalised last week at a court in Regina, Saskatchewan. It was brought about over claims that Ticketmaster hid the prices of ticket fees in 2018, breaching the Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act. The suit claimed that unnecessary fees outside the regular ticket price were deceptively added.

Ticketmaster refused to admit to any wrongdoing on their part, but agreed to settle.

The settlement states that affected customers are eligible to receive up to $45 in Ticketmaster credit. This can be used toward future ticket purchases. Eligible Ticketmaster customers should soon be contacted by the company with a link to receive their credit.

“While this case does not involve a mega-settlement, it has proved to be a legitimate consumer protection lawsuit which could only have been viably prosecuted as a class action,” wrote Justice Graeme Mitchell, sitting at Regina’s Court of King’s Bench. “Class counsel deserve an economic incentive for pursuing this claim to its successful resolution.”

Lawyers will take C$1.7m – more than a quarter – of the C$6m settlement. Lead plaintiff Crystal Watch will receive C$25,000.
