ATG Entertainment DE, in collaboration with the City of Vienna and Wien Holding, is set to introduce a new theatre in the Austrian capital.

Theater im Prater is the largest privately financed theatre project of the last century and will have a capacity of 1,800 seats. The Prater is a large public park in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna.

The project was announced last month.

ATG Entertainment will foot the bill and the opening of the new theatre is planned for the end of 2027. Theater im Prater plans to host top international musical productions, expanding Vienna’s cultural offerings and providing the city with an annual added value of €157m (£130m/$162m).

“We are very pleased to be here in Vienna to build a world-class theatre in the Prater,” said Joachim Hilke, chief executive, Europe, ATG Entertainment.

“ATG Entertainment wants to host outstanding and spectacular shows for audiences in Vienna and the many musical tourists. I am sure that the Theater im Prater will enhance Vienna’s reputation for musical theatre and will sustainably strengthen this cultural metropolis in the heart of Europe.”

City Councillor Peter Hanke said that the project will “improve the cultural and tourist profile of the city” with “expected positive economic results”.

He added that the new theatre would “strengthen Vienna as a location”.

ATG Entertainment’s continental European venues also include Hamburg’s Mehr! Theater am Großmarkt and Berlin’s Admiralspalast.

Vienna is also due to gain a 20,000-capacity entertainment venue after CTS Eventim confirmed it had been given the go-ahead following the termination of the original agreement with Oak View Group.
