More than 800,000 tickets have been snapped up during the first sales phase for this year’s FIFA World Cup with the remaining tickets to become available next week after the Qatar 2022 draw.
FIFA said that a total of 804,186 tickets have been secured after the initial random selection draw sales period — which began in January and generated 17 million ticket requests — and a first-come, first-served phase that concluded at the start of this week.
The top 10 countries for sales so far include host nation Qatar, the US, England, Mexico, the UAE, Germany, India, Brazil, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia.
Individual match tickets – and tickets for the opening and final matches in particular – were the most popular products on offer, but fans also snapped up team-specific ticket series and four-stadium ticket Series.
The next random selection draw sales period will launch on FIFA.com/tickets on Tuesday, April 5 at 11:00 CET. The draw for the finals is to take place this Friday (April 1).
“Subsequently, fans will be able to see where and when their team is playing before applying for tickets in the next sales phase,” FIFA said in a statement.
The ticket application phase launched today in mid-January with a range of prices and packages to attract local and global fans, including a special fourth category that allows local residents to secure tickets for as little as QAR 40 (£8/$11/€10).
Fans were able to submit their ticket applications until February 8 ahead of a ballot. Successful, partially successful and unsuccessful applicants were notified by March 8.
FIFA has softened the rules from previous tournaments, as households can purchase up to six tickets per match and up to 60 tickets throughout the entire tournament.
