Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise the Texas Rangers is set to implement ticket price increases for the move to its new ballpark, Globe Life Field, as it was revealed that the cost of the project has increased by $200m (£151.4m/€172.8m).
The Rangers have played at Globe Life Park since the stadium opened in 1994, but are due to move to the new 41,000-seat ballpark (pictured last month) in 2020. The Star-Telegram newspaper reported that the project cost has risen from the original target of $1bn to around $1.2bn, putting it on a par with the adjacent AT&T Stadium in Arlington, home of NFL American football team the Dallas Cowboys.
While the City of Arlington’s contribution to the project has been capped at $500m, the Star-Telegram noted that the increased cost is likely to be met through aspects such as ticket revenue. In 2018, the average ticket price for a Rangers’ home game was $26.94, placing the team 19th in MLB.
Speaking to the newspaper, Texas Rangers executive vice-president of business operations, Rob Matwick, said that while the team has yet to finalise a ticketing strategy for the new ballpark it plans to communicate with season ticket holders this winter, with seat relocations on the cards.
“In some areas the seats will be more expensive, because there will be more prime hospitality that we have not been able to do in (Globe Life Park), but it’s important to offer something for everyone,” Matwick said. “The nature of the game, because we have 81 home dates, is to be able to reach all price ranges in 41,000 seats.
“We are going to have affordable tickets for all fans, but there are going to be areas that are more expensive, that’s fair to say.”
